- One can normally get food allergy only after eating a food.
- Touching or inhaling or smelling the food can only lead to localized hives in children but not systemic reactions.
- However, inhaling tiny food particles from steaming, boiling, frying, grating, shedding, or grinding can trigger an allergic reaction in sensitive people. People who are very sensitive should avoid situations in which aerosolized food could be inhaled.
- Peanut protein cannot become airborne from peanut butter but it may from peanut flour or dusty roasted peanuts.
- The smell of peanut butter is from volatile organic compounds that evaporate easily and is not related to particles of peanut butter in the air, so it is not likely to trigger an allergic reaction.
- Touching an allergenic food and then touching the eyes, nose, or mouth can cause an allergic reaction.
