Padma Shri Awardee Dr K K Aggarwal enters the Limca Book of World Records

-          Trains 11,453 children in hands only CPR 10 in 8 hours

New Delhi, March 7, 2014: Recognizing outstanding efforts towards educating common people about life-saving techniques, the Limca Book of World Records has recognized Dr. KK Aggarwal in three distinct categories in its 2014 edition. An eminent cardiologist and the President of Heart Care Foundation of India, Dr. KK Aggarwal has devised a special CPR 10 formula which can help revive 60 %  people within ten minutes of their death due to a sudden cardiac arrest. The announcement of Dr. KK Aggarwal becoming a world record holder was made in the launch of the 2014 edition of the book last evening.

Hands only Cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR is a method through which a person who has suffered from a sudden cardiac arrest can be brought back to life within 10 minutes of his death. According to Dr. KK Aggarwal’s formula, to revive a person after sudden cardiac arrest, within 10 minutes of the episode, for the next 10 minutes, compress the centre of their chest continuously and effectively, with a speed of 10 × 10 (100) per minutes. In the past one year Dr. KK Aggarwal has trained over 90,000 people in this simple but extremely effective life-saving technique.

Commenting on the occasion, Dr. KK Aggarwal said “It has been my endeavor to constantly spread awareness about various health issues and prevention measures in the country as a part of my role as the President of the Heart Care Foundation of India.  Hands only CPR 10 is an extremely easy to learn technique which can help save the life of 2-3 in 5 people who suffer from sudden cardiac arrest. Over the past one year I have seen many success stories of lives being saved using this technique and I hope that I can train more and more people in the future”.

The three records which have been created by Dr. KK Aggarwal include:

-          Most people trained in hands-only CPR 10 in a short time span – 11,453 students (8,193 female and 2630 males) trained in less than 8 hours on April 6, 2013

-          Maximum number of people trained in hands-only CPR during an event – 10,932 people trained in hands-only CPR 10 during the 19th Perfect Health Mela from November 1 to 16, 2013

-          Maximum number of people trained in hands-only CPR – 20,592 people in hands-only CPR in 43 days

A leading doctor and philanthropist, Dr. KK Aggarwal is also the recipient of three National Awards, namely the Padma Shri for brilliance in medicine, Dr. BC Roy award for excellence in socio-medical awareness and the DST National Award for excellence in Science and Technology communication.  He has also pioneered leading health initiatives such as bringing treatments such as clot dissolving therapy for acute heart attacks and Colour Doppler Echocardiography in the country.

Received Award on National Science Day at a special function organized at Raman Auditorium, Technology Bhawan, New Delhi

New Delhi, February 28, 2014: Recognizing outstanding contribution to science and medicine, the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India has announced Dr. KK Aggarwal as the winner of the National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology Communication in general for the year 2013. Dr. KK Aggarwal is an eminent cardiologist, the President of Heart Care Foundation of India and the Senior Vice President of the Indian Medical Association. The award was presented as part of National Science Day Celebrations held in New Delhi today.

A leading doctor and philanthropist, Dr. KK Aggarwal has initiated several campaigns to bridge the gap between science and health as his role as the President of The Heart Care Foundation of India, a leading national NGO. He has developed over 1000 short scientific preventive health messages aimed at educating the general public and imparted scientific training to over 90000 people on Hands Only CPR for revival after sudden death.

Dr. KK Aggarwal is also the recipient of two other National Awards, namely the Padma Shri for brilliance in medicine and the Dr. BC Roy National Award for excellence in socio-medical awareness. With the addition of the DST National Award, he becomes the only doctor in India to have received a national award in all these three prestigious categories.

Dr K K Aggarwal to Receive DST National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology Communication in General

Dr K K Aggarwal President Heart care Foundation of India will be awarded National Award for Outstanding Efforts in Science & Technology Communication in general for the year 2013. The award consists of Rs. 2 lakhs, a memento and a citation. The award will be presented on Feb 28 at DST Auditorium as part of National Science Day Celebrations.

Dr Aggarwal is also recipient of two other National Awards Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Award and will be the first Doctor in the country to have received these three National Awards.

The award is given by the National Council for Science & Technology Communication, an Apex Body of the Government of India under the Department of Science & Technology. The council instituted national awards to stimulate, encourage and recognize outstanding efforts in the area of science popularization and communication in 1987.

The award is presented to an individual or an institution for outstanding work in communication of science and technology and or promoting of scientific temper which had the widest impact in the country during the past five years.

Dr Aggarwal also Senior Consultant Physician and Cardiologist has immensely contributed  to the Society in Science and Technology Communication as a Clinician, Writer, Anchor, Trainer, Conceptualizer, Advisor, Researcher and Scientific Health Communicator.

Many of his low-cost science awareness modules have been recognized by the Government of India by releasing postal commemorative stamps (Run for the Heart 1991 Rs 1 Postal Stamp, Perfect Health Mela 1993 Rs 6.50 Postal Stamp and First Mega Telemedicine Camp 2012 Cancellation Stamp).

He was the Delhi Coordinator for Year of Scientific Awareness in 2004 and successfully launched and used folk artists as Sutradhars for creating scientific awareness on adolescence health and nutrition.

He has developed over 1000 preventive one liner scientific health messages for general public and provided scientific training to over 63400 people on Hands-only CPR for revival after sudden death.

His efforts in Scientific Health Awareness have also won him many prestigious National and International Awards like CMAAO IMA Oration, DMA Swasthya Ratna, Delhi Medical Association Sunder Lal Roopwati  Memorial Award , Dr Mungelar National IMA Award etc.

Dr Aggarwal is frequently quoted by electronic and print media with over 15,000 quotes. He has anchored many TV shows like over 26 episodes of “Take Care” for DD India and the currently on air "Health Wealth" on Zee Media.

ECG can be a marker for future sudden cardiac death

All school children enrolling for competitive games should have their ECG done.

Padma Shri & Dr. B C Roy National Awardee, Dr. K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India, said that routine ECG, if read correctly, can be used as a marker for sudden cardiac death, especially in children.

Dr. Aggarwal who is also Senior vice President, Indian Medical Association, said that all children being recruited for competitive sports should have their resting ECG done. ECG consists of wave which need to be interpreted by the doctors.

The Width of the wave called QRS duration is something which can be picked up even by inexperienced doctors and  nurses. A QRS width duration of more than 120 micro seconds in adults and 100 micro seconds in children 4-16 years and more than 90 micro seconds in children less than 4 years of age should warrant a specialized opinion.

Any heart rate of less than 60 or more than 100 per minute should also warrant, a further evaluation, especially if it is associated with wide QRS duration, as mentioned above. The heart rhythm should be regular and any irregularity should be evaluated.

Missing beats is a common occurrence but if a person misses his beat on exercise, it may be a sign of underlying heart blockages. In children, one should also look for QT prolongation in the ECG and if it is prolonged, it is a matter of concern. 

Dr KK Aggarwal receives Harpal S Buttar Oration Award from Nobel Laureate Dr Ferid Murad

 New Delhi: January 31, 2014: Padma Shri & Dr. B C Roy National Awardee, Dr. K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India is awarded with Harpal S Buttar Oration Award by the 6th International conference of International Academy for Cardiovascular Sciences.

The award consists of a memento and a cash prize of Rs. 10000.

The Oration was given to Dr. Aggarwal for his outstanding contribution for heart care and other achievements in cardiovascular sciences.

The Award was given by International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences India The award was given by Nobel Laureate Dr Ferid Murad of Washington University. Others who were present were Dr Harpal S Buttar himself and Dr G N Singh Drug Controller General of India.

Prof. Buttar is an eminent professor in Canada and has made significant contributions in preventive cardiology, especially role of diet.

The Oration was chaired by Dr. Robert Roberts, President and CEO, House of Ottawa Heart Institute Canada and Dr. S C Tiwari.

Dr. Aggarwal, who is also currently Senior Vice President Indian Medical Association, spoke on the concept of Savitri mantra for reviving a heart after sudden cardiac death.

Dr. Aggarwal said that consciousness does not leave the body for up to few minutes after cardiac arrest. During this period, if hands only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR 10) is attempted by bystander, the person can be revived.

At Heart Care Foundation of India, Dr. Aggarwal has designed the Savitri Mantra for easy adoption of the same by the public. It is based on the traditional Indian Vedic knowledge where Savitri fought with Yamraja and saved her husband Satyavan, probably, by doing something equivalent to hands only CPR.

The Savitri Mantra is the Formula of 10 (CPR 10), which talks about the importance of the numerical number ‘10’. It says, in English “To revive a person from sudden cardiac death, within 10 minutes of death (earlier the better), at least for the next 10 minutes (longer the better), compress the centre of the chest of the dead person by 1 ½” distance continuously with a speed of 10x10 i.e. 100 per minute.”

In Hindi it can be remembered as “Marne ke dus minute ke andar (jitna jaldi utna behtar), kam se kam agle dus minute tak (jitni der tak utna behtar, 10x10=100 ki gati se, apni chhati peetne ke bajaye mare hue aadmi ki chhati peeto.”

In a survey conducted on 1000 school children after three months, a recall value of Hindi version of the Mantra was excellent with 90% remembering the later part of the mantra and 60% remembering the complete mantra. 

Suraj Bhan D.A.V. Public School students learn CPR-10

1036 students of Suraj Bhan DAV Public School, Vasant Vihar learnt hands-only CPR 10 today, which explained how to revive a person within 10 minutes of cardiac death.  The training camp was conducted by Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee, Dr K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Senior Vice President Indian Medical Association.

Sudden cardiac deaths are more common in dry winter than in wet winter.  Ayurveda also mentions that there are more chances of acute rise in blood pressure and irregular heart disease in dry winter.

Smt. Anita Ahuja, Principal of DAV School said that one should include training of CPR 10 in every school in such a way that 100% of students and teachers get trained.

Later in the day at the annual function of Public Relations Society of India held at Eros Hotel, Dr. Aggarwal said that in today’s era nobody should die of sudden unexpected cardiac death.  But people like Farooq Sheikh, cine actor do die now and then. It is possible to anticipate sudden cardiac death and to revive a person after death, he further added.

If you can climb two flights of stairs, walk 2 km or have an exercise with your partner in the bed without any symptoms, there are negligible chances that you will die of sudden cardiac death in the next 10 years.  If your blood sugar, blood pressure and blood cholesterol are kept under control; you are a non-smoker and your ECG is normal, this further rules out future sudden cardiac death.

Dr KK Aggarwal Takes over As Senior National Vice President of Indian Medical Association

Dr. K K Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India took over as Senior National Vice President of Indian Medical Association for the year 2014. Dr Jitender B Patel from Ahmadabad took over as the President.  The team changed at Rajahmundry Andhra Pradesh at the central council meeting of IMA.

Dr. Aggarwal is Padma Shri and Dr. BC Roy National Awardee and a Senior Consultant, Physician and Cardiologist at Moolchand Medcity. In the past Dr. Aggarwal has served as the Head of Research wing and Academic wing of IMA and also Finance Secretary of IMA.

He has also served as President of Delhi Medical Association. He also served as President IMA New Delhi branch three times.

Dr. Aggarwal is known for his innovative low cost health awareness modules. In three of his conceptualized events National Commemorative Postal Stamps have been released.

Firstly in 1991, Run for your Heart and secondly in 1993 Perfect Health Mela, on both the occasions Government of India released postal stamps. In 2012 Government of Rajasthan released cancellation stamp on organizing first ever mega health check-up camp at Ajmer.
