Pregnancy has 10% mortality in dengue

Pregnancy has 10% mortality in dengue

The incidence of dengue in pregnancy is very low, but it is on a considerable rise especially in India. Although many cases may remain asymptomatic or manifest a mild form of disease, serious manifestations like severe dengue with hemorrhagic manifestations and shock can also occur and these are potentially life-threatening both to the mother and the baby.
Quoting a study by Dr Laxmi Maru and Dr Astha Jain from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College, Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy Awardee Dr KK Aggarwal said that maternal mortality in dengue cases is 10%, which otherwise is around 0.4% in India and 0.1% in western countries under normal circumstances.  Also, the mortality in severe dengue cases with hemorrhage or shock is 33 %.
