In a retrospective cohort study of men aged 35-57 yrs with hypertension (Multiple Risk Factor Intervention – MRFIT trial) during 6 years of follow-up, cardiovascular events (defined as heart attack, paralysis, bypass surgery, heart failure, left heart enlargement, peripheral artery disease, or angina) were significantly less common with chlorthalidone compared with hydrochlorothiazide.
