It is clear that like SARS, corona may not cause an epidemic in India due to high temperature, sunlight and humid conditions. But every adversity should be taken up as an opportunity. The opportunity here is

1.     Start droplet infection precautions by way of wearing mask in public places

2.     Hand wash hygiene precautions

Both should be an integral part of school, education.

This is regarding Corona virus update. We would like

1. India to set up an example and evacuate all the Indians stuck up in China including the Indian medical students. The same has been done by Japan and USA.

2. It is likely that WHO will declare  coronavirus as an international public health emergency and if that happens we request the government to launch a National Droplet infection control program  enlisting Universal Precautions Immediately with price capping of the drugs and masks etc which may be used in the prevention of droplet infections.

3. To declare two weeks paid leave or working from home for all patients’ and educational medical leave for students suffering from flu like illness. This will be the beginning of a respiratory hygiene program in the country. All persons with respiratory droplets infections need 14 days quarantine

4. To make simple surgical three layered masks availability mandatory at hospital receptions and public places for any one with cough and cold.

Regarding Coronavirus

1.    It behaves like SARS

2.    Every ten year it mutates

3.    It has origin from bats

4.    It spreads like large droplets (maintaining three feet from infected person will prevent distance)

5.    Spreads only form people having lower respiratory infections and not a worry for spread from upper respiratory infections or simple fever with cough and cold

6.    We know LRTI will always have breathlessness so unlikely to spread from people travelling with no breathlessness

7.    Unlikely to spread in other countries causing serious illness

So, the answer is

National droplet infection control program

Involving respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette

Use of simple masks by patients

Will take care of pollution illnesses also

Universal precautions and not when there is panic
