#AskDrKK: How to screen for asymptomatic kidney disease

#DrKKAnswers: An inexpensive urine dipstick test can help screen for asymptomatic kidney disease, according to a study published online July 29 in the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology.
In 2,574 patients, compared with albuminuria, a dipstick protein level of at least 1 g/L was a better predictor of rapid kidney function decline (1/2.6 participants ending up with RKFD).
Proteinuria is defined as albumin:creatinine ratio >30 mg/mmol or albumin concentration >200 mg/L. Clinical proteinuria is indicated at greater than 0.5 g of protein per day (greater or equal to 250 mg/L on a test strip).
