CPR 10 Utsav Inaugurated

New Delhi: 15th December 2013: Inaugurating a day-long hands-only CPR 10 Utsav, Mr. Jalaj Shrivastava Chairman NDMC said that cardiac first aid training in hands-only CPR 10 should be provided in every school and college as part of their educational programme. It has now become possible to train everybody as mouth to mouth resuscitation is no more required.
In his message, Mr D M Sapolia Chief secretary Govt of Delhi said that all heart patients must ensure that their relatives and employee learn this technique as heart patients are at risk for sudden cardiac arrest and they can be revived if the bystander at that point of time can attempt CPR 10 on them if they develop cardiac arrest.
Padma Shri and Dr B C Roy National Awardee and President Heart Care Foundation of India Dr. K K Aggarwal and Dr P K Sharma, MOH NDMC said that all healthcare personnel including security personnel in the hospital premises, bus conductors, bus drivers, police personnel etc. should also be trained in CPR 10 as they are the first ones to reach if a person has cardiac arrest.

Dr. Aggarwal further said that CPR 10 is only effective if it is attempted within 10 minutes of cardiac arrest. The Foundation released the CPR 10 mantra, which in Hindi reads as “Marne ke dus minute ke under dus minute tak aur 10 x 10 yani 100 prati minute ki speed se apni chhati peetne ke badle marne wale ki chhati peeto.”
In English it can be remembered as “within 10 minutes of death, earlier the better; at least for the next 10 minutes, longer the better; compress the centre of the chest of the dead person continuously and effectively with a speed of 10x10 i.e. 100 per minute.”
The journalists should also be trained in the technique as they are also among the first ones to reach the victim’s place. The chances of revival are up to 60 per cent if attempted within 10 minutes and these chances can be increased if there is availability of public access defibrillators.

Dr. Aggarwal said that the Government should issue an advisory so that every public place where there is a gathering of more than 50 people, which includes trains, buses, malls, hotels and restaurants it should be compulsory for them to have their staff trained in CPR 10 and also to make available public access defibrillators. As of today, only airlines have made it mandatory to have public access defibrillators.

Over 3000 persons were trained in a single sitting.

During  its  first session  conducted  in two batches in the Company’s Corporate Office at CGO Complex, New Delhi  where about  800 employees attended,  Shri   Garg said that  CPR 10 can revive a dead person within  the next   ten  crucial minutes. It is effective in all kinds of sudden and unexpected deaths, and more so in  deaths caused due to electric shock and cardiac arrest.  Mr Garg said that  it  is a very  important   for its employees to learn because of the reason that many times they have to work in close proximity with electrical wirings  and  installations in  Exchanges  and at customers premises.

Conducting the practical workshop of CPR 10, Padmashri  & Dr  B.C. Roy National  Awardee Dr. K K Aggarwal, President, Heart Care Foundation of India,  said that one does not need to have a medical degree to learn and practice  CPR 10:  any by-stander can revive a person within ten minutes of a clinical death.  Dr. Aggarwal said that  the Foundation has  named this as “Savitri CPR 10 Mantra”,  and as per this mantra – “within 10 minutes of death (the earlier, the better),  and at least for the next  10 minutes (the longer, the better),   compressing the centre of the chest of the victim with a speed of 10x10 i.e. 100 per minute”  by any by-stander / on-looker can bring back the victim from  the jaws of death, rather than wailing about the misfortune !   Translated to Hindi,  this mantra   is – “marne ke dus minute ke andar, kam se kam dus minute tak 10x10 = 100 prati minute ki gati se, apni chhati peetne ke badle mare hue aadmi ki chhati peeto”.!

Mr Garg also announced that with the assistance of Heart Care Foundation of India, MTNL shall be launching a free  telephone ring  tone  which can be downloaded by subscribers on the phone, that will provide step by step instructions on how to revive a person after sudden death.

Over 1000 students trained in CPR 10 at Bal Bharati Public School

Giving the practical training at Bal Bharati Public School, Dwarka, Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India and Vice President (Elect) IMA said that the origin of CPR is well described in our mythology. Savitri fighting with Yamraj to save the life of Satyavan probably was the first example of CPR in the Vedic era.
Dr. Aggarwal who gave training to over 1000 school children said that every person should learn the Savitri CPR 10 Mantra “Marne ke dus minute ke bheetar (jitna jaldi utna behtar) kam se kam agle dus minute tak (jitni der tak ho utna behtar) apni chhati peetne ke badle mare hue vyakti ki chhati peeto”.
Because of this mantra, many lives have been saved in the past few months.
Eighty percent of sudden cardiac deaths can be revived if the bystander learns CPR 10 and performs CPR 10 on a dead person within 10 minutes of death. Remember, in 10 minutes the victim cannot be taken to the hospital or a doctor may not be able to reach the victim’s site.

CPR should be both effective and continuous

Conducting a camp on Hands Only Hands On CPR 10 camp at Lady Reading Nursing School, Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India said that over 24 lakh people die in India every year because of cardiac arrest, 18 lakh of them die before they reach the hospital and 12 lakh can be revived by the bystander by learning the technique of Hands Only CPR 10.

Internationally, it is a must for every health care worker to learn Hands on CPR and renew their learning every year.

Conducting a camp where 150 nursing students were trained, Dr. KK Aggarwal said that nurses are the backbone of the society and are amongst the first ones to come in contact with a cardiac arrest victim in a health care setting. They should start CPR at the very onset of sudden cardiac arrest and not wait for the resident doctor to come. Call to the emergency team can be given by a ward boy or safai karamchari.

Most people die either because of bad performing CPR or low quality performance of CPR.
 Following are the important factors:
1.    Early recognition of sudden cardiac arrest by noting absence of respiration or gasping breathing.
2.    Providing adequate and effective CPR by remembering the words “Push Hard and Push Fast” by focusing on the quality of chest compressions.
3.    Allowing no interruption in CPR
4.    Taking not more than ten seconds to check for pulse.
5.    The rate of compression should be at least hundred compressions per minute.
6.    The Chest should be compressed for at least 2 inches with each compression.
7.    Chest should be allowed to recoil completely after compression.
8.    Chest compression should only be given with a person on a hard bed or on floor.
9.    To avoid rescuer fatigue, one may alternate the chest compressions.
10. If more than one rescuers are available, one should not attempt more than two minutes of resuscitation.

Heart Care Foundation of India to be in Limca Book of Records – trains 1010 people in CPR 10: Continuous Compression-only CPR in on session

New Delhi: Thursday, 1 November 2012:  Heart Care Foundation of India today created an Indian record by training 1010 students and teachers in one session in Continuous Compression-only CPR called CPR-10. The event was held at Birla Vidya Niketan School. 200 human dummies were used for the training.

Celebrities who witnessed and addressed the event were Dr Sadhvi Sadhna Ji Maharaj Chairperson World Fellowship of Religions, Ms Geeta Chandran, Noted Bharat Natyam Exponent, Mr Satish Upadhyay, Chairman Education Committee MCD South Zone, Dr Aparna Jaswal Sr Cardiologist Escorts Heart Institute, Dr H K Chopra Vice President Cardiological Society of India,  Dr Anil Bansal Jt Secretary National IMA, Mr Rakesh Paveria Additional DCP, Ms Minakshi Kushwaha Principal Birla Vidya Niketan and Ms Tapati Singhi Administrator Birla Vidya Niketan.

Launching the campaign, Ms Geeta Chandran said that 1% of the population at any given time should be trained in CPR-10.

Speaking on the occasion, Padma Shri & Dr. BC Roy National Awardee, Dr. KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India, said that resuscitation mantra is that within 10 minutes of clinical death, for the next 10 minutes the chest of the victim should be compressed with a speed of 100   (10 x 10) per minute. If the electric shock machine is not available, one can give two thumps in the centre of the chest from a distance of one foot.

Dr. Aggarwal said that all relations of heart patients, healthcare workers, health journalists should be trained in this procedure. The difference between CPR 10 and traditional CPR is that mouth to mouth respiration is not needed in CPR 10. The Foundation plans to train one lakh people in the next two years.

Learning can be one to one on a human dummy, called single-rescuer CPR or it can be multiple rescuer training with multiple people performing resuscitation on one person.
Single-rescuer training will be held on 9th November 2012 at the Perfect Health Mela ground where 200 nurses will learn the technique in one go.

The function also launched the various other activities to be held in MTNL Perfect Health Mela.

CPR 10

1.   Cardiac death is reversible in the first 10 minutes. In this period the brain remains alive even though the heart and respiration have stopped. This period is called clinical death.

2.   In Ayurvedic language, the consciousness and the Prana Vayu do not leave the body in the first 10 minutes and therefore if the heart can be revived, one can be revived.

3.    The best way to resuscitate is to provide mouth to mouth respiration combined with chest compressions but if a sole lay rescuer is present or multiple lay rescuers are reluctant to perform mouth-to-mouth breathing, the Heart Care Foundation of India recommends performance of CPR 10 using chest compressions alone, called continuous compression-only CPR.

4.   The CPR 10 mantra (Formula of 10) is: Within 10 minutes of clinical death for the next 10 minutes continuously and effectively compress the center of the chest with a speed of 100 (10x10) compressions per minute.

5.   Clinical death means no respiration, no heart breathing and no response on painful stimuli.

6.   Ten minutes mean as early as possible. The chances of revival reduce by 10% each minute.

7.   Center of the chest means in the centre of a line between two nipples.

8.   Continuously means with minimum interruptions

9.   Effectively means compressing the chest up to 5 cm with each down stroke and allowing the chest to recoil completely between each down-stroke
10. Remember: Push hard (compress 5 cm with each down stroke) and push fast (100 per minute) on the center of the chest.

11. Do not interrupt chest compressions to palpate for pulses and continue CPR 10 until electric shock machine is available or a doctor takes the charge or the patient wakes up.

12. CPR 10 is not for children or arrest that occurs due to drowning. In these cases, mouth to mouth breathing is still necessary.
