Safe water to drink and safe air to breathe is our right

Today is the third day of the ongoing 25th MTNL Perfect Health Mela. And, we have a series of “infotainment” activities lined up for you.

Clean water and air are essential to life. But, with rising pollution, these basic necessities can no longer be taken for granted.

Air pollution has become a much-talked about topic these days. World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that 9 out of 10 people breathe air containing high levels of pollutants reiterating the need for urgent action to check the dangerously high levels of pollution. What should worry us all is that 14 cities in India, along with our national capital Delhi, are among the 20 most polluted cities in the world with regard to PM2.5 levels in 2016. For PM10 levels also, 13 Indian cities are included among the 20 most-polluted cities of the world in 2016.

Besides air pollution, water pollution is another very important public health concern. Water pollution affects drinking water, rivers, lakes, oceans and water bodies. Industrial waste, microbial pollutants from sewage, waste water, chemical fertilizers and pesticides, leakage from landfills are some of the common sources of water pollution. Polluted water is harmful to the health of humans and animals and also adversely affects the environment.

Given their significance, safe water and air have also been included in the Sustainable Development Goals “Clean water and sanitation” (SDG 6) and “Sustainable cities and communities” (SDG 11).

Day three will focus on two conclaves.

The “Puricare” Conclave on right to safe water and air will discuss this very crucial environmental issue.

The second conclave today on Fertility will be moderated by Dr Kaberi Banerjee, Clinical Director, Advanced Fertility & Gynaecology Center, New Delhi.

The Panelists include Mr AR Kohli, Former Governor of Mizoram; Mr Amit Gujral, Head Corporate Marketing LG, Mr JK Jain, Chairman DASNAC; Ms Anita Singh Member Executive Committee, INTACH; Ms Pinky Anand Additional Solicitor General of India and Ms Shobha Mishra Ghosh, Assistant Secretary General FICCI.

These conclaves will be followed by a Qawwali performance by the renowned Warsi Brothers.

The theme for the Mini Mela today (9 am to 1 pm) is Adolescent Girls Health Mela by Maharaja Agrasen Adarsh Public School, Pitampura

The highlight of the day is “Anmol”, competition for the specially-abled, who will participate in activities like Yoga, painting, singing, dance and diya decoration.

The National Youth Fest, Harmony & Eco Fest will continue today and will feature Folk dance, Aerobics, Painting, Poster making + slogan writing.

There are free health checkup camps every day of the Mela, as also today.

Spiritual Guru and renowned International author, Dr Deepak Chopra launches Heart Care Foundation of India’s new initiative – the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund

The project has been instituted with an aim that no one should die of heart disease just because they cannot otherwise afford treatment

Heart Care Foundation of India, a leading national non-profit organization committed to making India a healthier and disease free nation today launched its new initiative, the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund. The basic ideology behind the fund is to ensure that no person dies of a heart disease just because he or she cannot afford treatment. The launch event was held on the occasion of World Heart Day in the presence of none other than renowned motivational speaker and internationally acclaimed author Dr. Deepak Chopra at the Kedar Nath Sahni Auditorium in New Delhi. Any person irrespective of their gender, religion or age can apply for the benefits of the fund by calling on its helpline number +919958771177.

Research indicates that in the National Capital of India itself, 19 patients die directly due to heart disease everyday. Several of the heart conditions are curable and death is preventable; however, not everyone can afford the treatment and hospital costs. The Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund is an attempt to bridge this disparity and provide individuals the ability to live a healthy- and disease-free life. Since the inception of the project in April 2014, over 200 patients belonging to economically weaker sections of the society have already been helped and treated. The aim is to take this number up to 600 by the end of the first year itself.

Speaking at the occasion Dr. Deepak Chopra, the New Age Motivational Guru and Internationally Acclaimed Author said, “Heart disease is becoming a global problem and its implications in a country like India where majority of the people cannot afford treatment is huge. I applaud NGOs like the Heart Care Foundation of India for playing such an instrumental role in spreading preventive health awareness in the country and providing effective solutions for the economically weaker sections of the society. The Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund is a noble project aimed at ensuring that no person dies of heart disease because they cannot afford treatment. I urge everyone to come forward and support Dr. KK Aggarwal and his team in making this a success”.

Adding to this, Dr. KK Aggarwal, Padma Shri, National Science and Communication and Dr. BC Roy Awardee and President of the Heart Care Foundation of India said, ”We at Heart Care Foundation of India are committed to raising awareness and providing effective solutions to the growing medical problems in the country. As a part of this endeavor, in addition to our two flagship projects the Perfect Health Mela, a mass health awareness module; and the Hands Only CPR campaign, a project to educate the masses about revival after sudden cardiac arrest; we have launched the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund to help save lives of all those heart patients who cannot afford treatment. We are extremely thankful to Dr. Deepak Chopra and the Malik Family for supporting us in this cause and hope that we can continue to make a difference to the society in the future”.

An expert committee assesses all applications received by the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund. Once sanctioned, the funds are directly deposited in the bank account of the medical establishments treating the patient. Heart Care Foundation of India provides surgeries in association with leading hospitals in the capital city such as Medanta – The Medcity and National Heart Institute for surgical treatments and also provides lodging facilities at concessional rates for outstation patients. In order to reach more patients, a mass patient screening drive will be conducted at the 21st MTNL Perfect Health Mela, another project of the NGO scheduled to be held between October 15-19, 2014 at Talkatora Indoor Stadium in New Delhi.
Commenting on its partnership with the project for the treatment of patients with congenital heart diseases, Dr. Naresh Trehan, Chairman of Medanta - The Medicity said, “In India itself 1.3 lakh children are born with congenital heart disease every year and can live a healthy life with timely surgery. Understanding the plight of the large number of people who don’t have the means to opt for this surgery, we at Medanta - The Medicity are supporting the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund in its effort to ensure that no person dies of heart disease just because they cannot afford treatment”.

Addressing the press, Mr. Raghuvinder Kataria, a leading Entrepreneur, International Investor and the Chief Patron of Heart Care Foundation of India said, “On behalf of the Malik family and myself, I congratulate Heart Care Foundation of India on a project as noble as the Sameer Malik Heart Care Foundation Fund. With each life saved, Sameer continues to live in our hearts”.

Soul is the biggest pharmacy in the world – Dr KK Aggarwal

On the occasion of World Mental Health Day in a function organized by Delhi Medical Association, Padma Shri and Dr. B.C. Roy National Awardee, Dr KK Aggarwal, President Heart Care Foundation of India said that the very fact that our body has a receptor for each and every drug means the human body is the biggest pharmacy in the World and has the capacity to produce each and every drug.  Obviously God never created these receptors for Pharma Company to invent drug molecule.

Dr Aggarwal said that in the forthcoming 20th MTNL Perfect Health Mela being organized from 23rd to 27th October, 2013 at Constitution Club of India will have special classes and counseling sessions on mental health.

Dr Aggarwal said that the spiritual medicine should be part and parcel of MBBS curricular and it involves teaching on how to shift from sympathetic to para sympathetic state of mind. Sympathetic state of mind leads to diseases and para sympathetic state to a healing mode. Most of the mind, body and spiritual techniques are based on this principal.

Dr Aggarwal said that beta blockers are one drug which are known to reduce cardiac mortality and again shifts one to para sympathetic mode artificially.  Talking about Yoga, Dr Aggarwal said that it is a natural beta blocker.

One should have a dialogue with ones soul everyday.  The same can be done by meditation or by adapting to slower and deeper breathing with a rate of 4 to 5 per minute for the next 20 minutes.
The simplest spiritual prescription is to chant OM or AUM which medically produces a pain killer and tranquilizer at the same time.

Dr Aggarwal said that stress is the reaction of the body and the mind to the interpretation of a known situation.  Spiritual counseling, therefore, involves changing interpretation.
